Storyline:
Seven Australian teenage friends from a small town go on a camping trip to be with nature. During their trip, they see military aircraft fly overhead. What they didn't know was their country was being invaded by another country. Returning home, they discover that they are at war. With no training, they band together to fight the enemy.
Review:
I have just seen this film ... oh good Lord.
OK, first the positives. The cast are a very engaging brat-pack; there are some medium-OK action scenes; and it really is a well-budgeted, slick-looking production. It's genuinely good to see this much money splashed out on an Aussie movie.
But dear God save us from the dialogue! Sometimes it's so bad that a kind of smothering embarrassment descends on the viewer. It's not-knowing-where-to-look bad. There are whole scenes where the characters over- or under-react; humour creeps into moments where it doesn't belong; and the dramatic interactions are choked with awkward changes of register.
Inconsistencies are permitted to rampage all over the screen. Example: our teen geniuses decide to leave a known stoner on lookout, and are then astonished to find that he has fallen asleep listening to his iPod. The girl who nearly shoots him for this offense - while delivering a stern homily on responsibility - goes on to commit a far worse error: while waiting in ambush she is herself ambushed because she drifted off into a conversation about which of the cast is a great kisser. Now there's a diversion to drain the tension out of any attempted suspense build-up ...
There are factual gaps in this movie the size of a Blue Mountains gorge (where a lot of this seems to have been filmed). Who are the invaders? What's the international response? What is the government doing? Oh, that's all too much hassle to script ... let's get back to blowing up that bridge. (After all, that's never been done in a movie before.)
The verdict? Snogging and shooting don't mix.
